PRESS RELEASE
HONG KONG, December 7th, 2016 – GDC Technology Limited (‘GDC’), a leading global provider of digital cinema solutions, announcedtoday that the Film Expo Group has selected it for the inaugural CineAsia Technology Innovator of the Year Award. The organisation will present the honour to Dr. Man-Nang Chong, the founder, chairman and CEO of GDC, at the CineAsia Awards Ceremony on Thursday, December 8th at the Grand Hyatt Hong Kong.
The beginnings of GDC go back to 1995, when Texas Instruments expanded its regional digital signal processing (DSP) design contest to include universities worldwide. Dr. Chong’s team was selected as the winner from 230 entries and he is credited with the commercial release of the device used to digitally restore 35mm films, which is still sold today. Recognising the industry’s need to embrace digital technologies to stay ahead of home entertainment and handheld devices, Dr. Chong founded GDC in 1999 and began providing digital media servers. Since then, GDC has become one of the world’s largest providers of digital cinema solutions.
Driven by a culture of innovation, GDC was the first company to develop a software-based digital cinema media server in 2000. This accomplishment was followed by the production and deployment of the first theatre management systems in 2003 and the obtainment of FIPS-140 compliance in 2008. The company also delivered the first Standalone Integrated Media Block (IMB) in 2013, and integrated DTS:X, an object-based immersive sound technology from DTS, Inc., in its media servers in 2015.
Speaking about the honour, Dr. Chong said, “I am deeply grateful to accept this award on behalf of GDC. To be recognised by industry peers for work on something as important as the digital cinema technology is very special. I would like to thank the CineAsia award selection committee for recognising the importance of our contributions. It is a privilege to lead an organisation of talented individuals who innovate and experiment, come up with new ideas and drive innovation to advance the cinema industry.”
Andrew Sunshine, vice president of the Film Expo Group, said, “As the leader in digital technology solutions in cinema, GDC continues helping the industry grow and improve throughout the region. We could not have thought of a more deserving recipient of this award in 2016.”
For nearly two decades, GDC has led the industry with first-to-market innovations. Moving beyond digital cinema, it is also working on virtual reality (VR) projects combining stunning visuals, motion ride and DTS:X immersive sound. GDC will demonstrate its upcoming virtual reality experience at its trade show booth (#311) during CineAsia 2016. Additional information on CineAsia can be found at www.cineasia.com.
