The Hunger Games: Mockingjay – Part 1 took in $8.98 million on Monday to easily lead the daily box office for a fourth consecutive day. The third installment of Lionsgate’s blockbuster franchise starring Jennifer Lawrence was down 65 percent from Sunday. In comparison, last year’s The Hunger Games: Catching Fire fell 64 percent on its first Monday to gross $12.32 million. Mockingjay – Part 1 surpassed the $130 million mark on Monday and has grossed $130.88 million in four days. While Mockingjay – Part 1 is off to the largest four-day start of 2014, the film is performing below pre-release expectations and is running a significant 23 percent behind the massive $170.39 million four-day start of Catching Fire.
Disney’s Big Hero 6 placed in second with $2.18 million. The 3D computer animated film from Walt Disney Animation Studios was down 64 percent from Sunday and up a strong 67 percent over last Monday, as the approaching Thanksgiving holiday is already providing a boost to the film and the marketplace in general. Big Hero 6 continues to perform well with $137.93 million in 18 days. That places the film 11.5 percent ahead of the $123.69 million 18-day take of 2012’s Wreck-It Ralph.
Paramount’s Interstellar claimed third place with $1.73 million. The Christopher Nolan directed sci-fi film fell 60 percent from Sunday and a healthy 20 percent from last Monday. Interstellar has grossed $122.66 million after 18 days of wide release. That places the film 27.5 percent behind the $169.28 million 18-day take of last year’s Thor: The Dark World. Interstellar should be able to stabilize this weekend thanks to the holiday frame and continued IMAX grosses.
Dumb and Dumber To took fourth place with $1.19 million. Universal’s long awaited comedy sequel starring Jim Carrey and Jeff Daniels continues to display signs of significant front-loading, as the film was down 66 percent from Sunday and down 42 percent from last Monday. Dumb and Dumber To has grossed $58.92 million in eleven days and is set to surpass the $60 million mark today. While Dumb and Dumber To is running in line with expectations, the film is highly likely to continue to lose momentum quickly going forward.
