Monday Update: Sony’s Spider-Man: Homecoming took in a confirmed $117.0 million opening weekend, the best debut for a Spider-Man film since 2007. It provides a much-needed boost to studio Sony, as the studio had been experiencing their modern record low for market share.
Last weekend’s leader Despicable Me 3 took second place with $33.5 million, but broke its own record for the all-time highest theater count for a movie.
The full table of weekend actuals is at bottom, after our Sunday update below which features more numbers and analysis.
Sunday Update: With great power comes great responsibility, and with a new Spider-Man film comes great cash. Spider-Man: Homecoming earned an estimated $117 million debut this weekend, marking the biggest Spider-Man film opening in a decade and potentially Sony’s biggest cumulative grosser since Skyfall in 2012.
Sony is hyping Homecoming as “the second-highest opening for a Spider-Man film.” Although it certainly earned a lot, that claim may be a bit misleading. After factoring for ticket price inflation, Homecoming earned less than the openings for all three films in the “original” trilogy starring Tobey Maguire.
However, Homecoming did open higher than either of the two more recent Amazing Spider-Man reboot films starring Andrew Garfield. The first of those two opened on a Tuesday which diminished its opening weekend, but in an apples-to-apples comparison of their first seven days, Homecoming appears likely to earn more.

How did Homecoming do so well? Several factors contributed.
The sixth installment in the Spider-Man franchise dating back to the 2002 original, this was the first to tie the character into the massively popular cash cow Avengers franchise. Marketing prominently featuring Robert Downey Jr.’s appearance as Iron Man, plus new lead actor Tom Holland had previously been introduced as a supporting character in last year’s smash Captain America: Civil War.
As the only major new debut, Homecoming was also helped by the lack of new competition. However, that’s no guarantee — in the past year, both Transformers: The Last Knight and Inferno underperformed despite being the only new wide release during their opening weekends.
Lastly, you can’t discount the great word of mouth. The film earned an “A” CinemaScore and posts a 94 percent rating on Rotten Tomatoes.
With Homecoming and the continued success of Baby Driver, Sony is quickly reversing what had been a rough 2017 at the box office, particularly for franchise installments. All of Sony’s other 2017 films that were part of a series were the lowest grossing films in that series domestically — Smurfs: The Lost Village, Underworld: Blood Wars, and Resident Evil: The Final Chapter. (Also for Inferno in late 2016.) That trend looks to be reversed with Homecoming.
Sony needs the boost. After finishing first among all studios in 2012, they then slid to fourth place in 2013 and 2014, then slid again to fifth place in 2015 and 2016, and prior to this weekend were in seventh place for 2017. With only 4.0 percent of market share this year, Sony was at only half of the 8.0 percent market share they managed in 2016 — which itself was down half from 16.1 percent in 2012.
While Sony’s Passengers and The Magnificent Seven were both moderate sleeper hits, and last summer’s low-budget horror Don’t Breathe surpassed expectations, the studio hadn’t produced a film earning above $130 million since Spectre in late 2015. Homecoming almost beat that amount in its opening weekend alone, and could potentially even reach $300 million if it holds well enough throughout the rest of July and August.
Elsewhere at the box office…
Last weekend’s leader Despicable Me 3 from Universal fell to second place, with a 53 percent drop to an estimated $34.0 million. That second-weekend decline was higher than for Despicable Me 2 but lower than for Minions. DM3 is trailing both of those films considerably on the domestic front, though it’s earning substantial amounts overseas.
After breaking the record last weekend for most theaters with 4,432, DM3‘s six-theater expansion this weekend gives it the new record yet again with 4,438. (Theater count is different than screen count, since a film can play on multiple screens in a single multiplex theater. The modern record for screen count is held by Star Wars: The Force Awakens.)
Sony and TriStar’s Baby Driver took third place, with a 38 percent decline to $12.7 million.
Warner Bros.’ Wonder Woman took fourth place, with a 35 percent decline to $10.1 million. The film’s steady hold, after already experiencing the best holds for a superhero film in recent memory, is especially impressive this weekend given the direct superhero competition.
The top 10 films this weekend earned an estimated $199.1 million total. That’s 26 percent above the $157.6 million earned by the top 10 last weekend, and 10 percent above the $179.5 million earned by the top 10 on the equivalent weekend last year.
Overseas Update:
Spider-Man: Homecoming earned $140.0 million in its overseas debut, taking first place in 50 of its 56 markets. Combined with its domestic gross, the global opening is $257.0 million — the fourth-highest global opening of the year and the #31 highest global opening ever. And that’s with China still to come.
Despicable Me 3 set a record for the largest animated opening in China with $66.0 million. [Read more here.] The film earns $139.0 million overseas this weekend, just shy of Spider-Man, although close enough that it could prove to be the overseas weekend leader when weekend actuals are revealed on Monday.
Thanks to China, DM3 improves 40 percent over last weekend overseas. However, due to its sharp dropoff domestically, the film’s $173.0 million global weekend represents a 0.7 percent decline from last frame. The film has now earned $298.4 million overseas and $447.5 million globally.
