Monday Update: Audiences went ape this weekend, bringing Fox’s War for the Planet of the Apes to a first place debut with a $56.52million. The full table of box office weekend actuals is at bottom, after the Sunday update featuring fuller numbers and analysis.
Sunday Update: Audiences went ape this weekend, bringing Fox’s War for the Planet of the Apes to a first place debut with an estimated $56.5 million. A neck-and-neck race was predicted for the top spot between War and last weekend’s leader Spider-Man: Homecoming, but the latter fell further than expected, allowing War a decent lead.
The third and final installment in the rebooted Apes trilogy, starring Andy Serkis and Woody Harrelson, War starts 22.1 percent behind the second installment Dawn. In pure dollars it starts 3.0 percent ahead of the first installment Rise, but that film was released in 2011 — adjusted for ticket price inflation, War starts 7.4 percent behind Rise instead.
Still, War should be considered a decent if not overwhelming success for Fox, which had earned the top grosser in only one of the previous 15 weekends. The film was boosted by its great word of mouth, led by a 95 percent score on Rotten Tomatoes — better than the two previous installments’ 81 and 90 percent ratings respectively.

Sony’s Spider-Man: Homecoming fell further than expected in its second weekend, dropping 61.3 percent to an estimated $45.2 million. That’s a noticeably steeper second-weekend drop than other superhero films this year: -55.5 percent for Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2, -43.3 percent for Wonder Woman, or -56.9 percent for Logan.
On Sunday, Homecoming overtook the total gross of 2014’s previous franchise installment The Amazing Spider-Man 2, and appears likely to overtake 2011’s The Amazing Spider-Man by the end of the month unless it drops off particularly fast. (Overtaking the cumulative gross for any of the three original Spider-Man installments starring Tobey Maguire will be much more difficult.)

With a “healthy” start in fifth place was The Big Sick, from Lionsgate and Amazon Studios, making an estimated $7.6 million. Expanding into wide release on its third weekend after two frames in limited release, the romantic comedy-drama starring Kumail Nanjiani and Emily Gordon has now earned $16.0 million.
With a terrific 97 percent rating on Rotten Tomatoes, the film is perhaps the first release of the year to earn possible Best Picture buzz, albeit as a dark-horse candidate. That counter-programming likely attracted some adult audiences who otherwise wouldn’t be as interested in any other movies currently playing during the summer blockbuster season.
Broad Green Pictures’ Wish Upon made a “wish” and earned a seventh place debut of $5.5 million. The low-budget fantasy horror thriller wasn’t expected to crack the top five, and its opening was about in line with the other three wide-release openings from Broad Green Pictures since the studio began in 2015.
Elsewhere at the box office, Universal’s Despicable Me 3 took third place with a 43.7 percent decline to $18.9 million. It’s now pacing 28.3 and 31.8 percent behind Minions and Despicable Me 2 through the same point in release. Sony and TriStar’s Baby Driver took fourth place, declining a respectable 32.7 percent to $8.7 million.
The top 10 films this weekend earned an estimated $157.2 million total. That’s 20.7 percent behind the $198.3 million earned by the top 10 last weekend. It’s also 23.6 percent percent below the $205.9 million earned by the top 10 on this weekend last year, when The Secret Life of Pets led with $104.3 million.
Overseas Update:
Spider-Man: Homecoming — and not War — was the biggest movie on the “planet” this weekend with a $117.5 million global weekend. After earning the #31-highest global weekend of all time last frame, Homecoming made $72.3 million overseas this time, a 48.4 percent decline. The film has now earned $261.1 million overseas and $469.3 million globally.
Despicable Me 3 earned $71.0 million overseas, down 48.1 percent. Following last weekend’s record-breaking start in China, it was the second-place film there this frame, after a local title. The film has earned $113.6 million in China to date, as part of a $434.1 million overseas and $619.4 million global total.
War For the Planet of the Apes started with $46.0 million overseas, for a $102.5 million global opening weekend. The film only opened in two of the top 10 international markets, meaning that future territories such as China and others will help the film out quite a bit internationally as the summer goes along.
