Weekend Projections: ‘Boss Baby’ Eyes $26.6M; ‘Beauty and the Beast’ Adds $24.5M; ‘Smurfs’ ($14.5M) & ‘Going In Style’ ($13M) Debut

Saturday Update: Fox and DreamWorks’ The Boss Baby added $6.86 million on Friday to begin its repeat performance in first place as it eased 56 percent from opening day last week. At $69.9 million through eight days, the film stands just 12 percent behind the pace of Home. This weekend should net around $26.6 million.

Beauty and the Beast continued to chug along with another $6.847 million on Friday. With $414.14 million in the domestic bank through 22 days of play, the film should ring up $24.5 million in its fourth weekend.

Going In Style beat some expectations with a $4.2 million opening day, just 18 percent behind the $5.1 million of Last Vegas in November 2013. Opening weekend looks to land around $13 million after all, a healthy start for the low-budget comedy.

Smurfs: The Lost Village debuted with $4.15 million yesterday, generally lining up with final pre-release expectations as it competes in a crowded family market. The studio expects a $14.5 million weekend, although past comparisons indicate a final tally around $13.9 million based on its Thursday-to-Friday trajectory.

Meanwhile, The Case for Christ bowed to $1.54 million yesterday, besting the $1.2 million start of Do You Believe? in March 2015. This weekend looks likely to finish around $4.4 million.

Key weekend projections are below. Studio weekend estimates will follow on Sunday.

Friday Report: Warner Bros. reports today that Going In Style debuted to $600,000 last night from shows beginning at 5pm. By comparison, that’s slightly more than Momuments Men ($550,000) during its opening night, although Thursday night openings have proliferated in popularity since then.

Meanwhile, Smurfs: The Lost Village took in $375,000 from shows also beginning at 5pm last night. With The Boss Baby still in significant play — a film which bowed to $1.5 million on Thursday night last week — an opening weekend in the mid-teen millions remains expected.

Initial grosses for The Case for Christ were not available at the time of this article’s publishing.

Key Friday estimates from the studios and initial weekend projections will be available tomorrow morning.
