Friday Afternoon Update: For the second week in a row it was essentially a two-man show as Suicide Squad and Ghostbusters finished 1-2 on the weekly Twitter leader board. To take it a step further, both films have been in the top 3 every week since the beginning of May which is a good indication of just how dominant both have been.
By comparison Deadpool had 220,922 tweets during the same period before its release which should be a helpful marker for just how large Suicide Squad can open to.
Ghostbusters is a tricky one to pin-point as good of a comparison for since its buzz has been a unique brand of contempt and anticipation by its target audience. Many have pointed to large amounts of negative reviews to demonstrate that the heaps of tweets are merely angry fans of the franchise. That theory falls away when you look at other recent blockbusters which under-performed at the box office such as Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Out Of The Shadows, Fantastic Four and Tomorrowland, all of which didn’t even have a quarter of the buzz levels that Ghostbusters has managed. Its hard to ignore the numbers it has thrown up over the Summer, and even though it still does have some major red flags surrounding it (namely the fact that it hasn’t been screened for critics yet) there is a much greater potential upside for the film than anything else.
