Weekend Actuals: ‘Logan’ Rips Up $88.4M Opening; ‘Get Out’ Falls To Second w/ $28.2M; ‘Moonlight’ Has Its Best Weekend Yet

Fox’s R-rated action film Logan, the final installment of the Wolverine series, earned a great $88.4 million opening. The film sported the widest theater count for an R-rated movie of all time and earned unusually high reviews for a superhero movie. Universal’s horror Get Out, which led last weekend, took the runner-up spot with $28.2 million. Its 15.4 percent decline was the best second-weekend hold for a horror movie in many years, if not ever.

A24’s Moonlight, fresh on the heels of its Academy Award win for Best Picture, expanded its theater count and earned the best weekend of its entire theatrical run with $2.3 million. And Open Road’s Collide fell by a jaw-dropping 88.5 percent in its second weekend to only $173 thousand, claiming the worst second-weekend fall of all time, overtaking 2005’s Undiscovered with 86.4 percent.
