Universal’s The Secret Life of Pets notched one of the most impressive opening weekends for an original film with $104.35 million, exceeding the cumulative weekend grosses of the next 10 highest films combined. Warner Bros.’ The Legend of Tarzan held onto the number-two spot for the second weekend in a row with $21.00 million, but the real story was third-place, where Disney’s Finding Dory made $20.81 million and overtook Captain America: Civil War to become the highest-grossing film of 2016. Fox’s Mike & Dave Need Wedding Dates came in fourth place with a decent $16.62 million.
