Warner Bros.’ Wonder Woman has started with $18.7 million in overseas markets, ahead of its expected $100+ million weekend domestic launch.
The film opened in 32 additional markets on Thursday, taking in $12.1 million. That raises its total to 37 markets and $18.7 million overseas. An impressive overseas weekend is expected, especially after China opens the film on Friday.
The superhero origin story starring Gal Gadot and Chris Pine is expected to be one of the biggest movies of the summer, and hopes to revive the lackluster returns of the summer movie season thus far at the box office.
The movie should face tough competition in the overseas markets from the second weekend of Disney’s Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales, which launched with a huge $208.4 million overseas weekend last frame. While Wonder Woman likely won’t be able to reach that number in its overseas debut, it should handily beat Pirates‘s opening on the domestic front.
Stay tuned throughout the weekend for further updates from Boxoffice.
