Monday Afternoon Update: Even though it won’t be released until November, the early buzz surrounding Almost Christmas was enough to see it take a commanding lead over tracked upcoming films this past week. Its 120,470 new likes gave it almost a 200% increase in likes from the week before, and was close to 30,000 more new likes than its nearest competitor. Director David E. Talbert’s last film Baggage Claim didn’t even have a Facebook page this distance out and when it was created it had only 90,000 likes on its day of release. Needless to say this is a very positive start, especially for an original comedy to have this much likes 4 months out.
Ice Age Collision Course also had a strong week, rising 93,633 likes despite having a massive 18 million+ likes already. With The Secret Life Of Pets going full bore at the box office this past weekend and Finding Nemo having a record breaking summer there didn’t appear to be much room for yet another animated CGI blockbuster but Ice Age has done very well with its Facebook returns, seeing almost 800,000 new likes in 2016 alone. By comparison, The Secret Life Of Pets had just over 1 million new likes in 2016 before its release on July 8.
Lights Out continued to surprise, rising a further 35,478 new likes to reach 233,723 likes overall. Its well on track to becoming one of the most liked horrors in 2016. Only The Conjuring 2 had more likes prior to release in the genre for 2016 so far, with The Forest, The Boy and The Darkness all trailing far behind. This film has a very real possibility of surprising in a few weeks as a counter-programming alternative to the ever-abundant blockbusters.
