Monday Morning Update: The Huntsman: Winter’s War led all tracked upcoming films this past week with 209,511 new likes, bringing its overall tally to just shy of 5 million likes. In the past four months the film has accumulated over 750,000 new likes, this echoes the 800,000 likes that the first film in the series had at its same point pre-release. With that being said its important to remember that sequels do tend to have a leg up to original films in terms of buzz because of the existing awareness. We are currently predicting $29 million for the film next weekend.
Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them continues to grab the attention of movie (and no doubt Harry Potter) fans worldwide as it has already amassed over 750,000 likes even though it doesn’t open for another 6 months. Those who dismiss its large numbers and explain them as merely riding on Harry Potter‘s coattails might be best to remember Stephanie Meyer’s The Host which managed only 400,000 total likes before release despite trying to capitalize on the author’s previous Twilight novels/films which had over 50 million likes at the time (yes even more than Potter).
The Shallows continues to impress me, rising another 26,405 likes to see it top the 150,000 total mark. If this can rise to over 500,000 by release I’d be very surprised if it didn’t see a teen millions opening which would no doubt be a huge win for its backers.
