NORTH AMERICA: ‘Guardians of the Galaxy’ Leads with $0.722M on Monday as It Inches Closer to $300M

Disney’s Guardians of the Galaxy grossed $0.722 million on Monday to remain in first place at the daily box office. The blockbuster sci-fi superhero adaptation from Marvel has now led the daily box office for 17 consecutive days. Guardians of the Galaxy was down 72 percent from Sunday and down a sharp 88 percent from last Monday’s inflated Labor Day performance. Guardians of the Galaxy has grossed a massive $295.49 million in 39 days, which leaves the film just $4.51 million away from becoming the first release of 2014 to reach the $300 million domestic milestone.

Let’s Be Cops placed in second for the day with $0.437 million. Fox’s low-budget action comedy fell 68 percent from Sunday and 79 percent from last Monday. The 27-day total for Let’s Be Cops stands at a very solid $67.20 million. Let’s Be Cops continues to be aided from strong word of mouth and from the current lack of new comedies in the marketplace.

The November Man claimed third with $0.388 million. Relativity’s action thriller starring Pierce Brosnan was down just 63 percent from Sunday and down 82 percent from last Monday. The November Man has grossed $18.37 million in 13 days, which is in line with the film’s modest expectations.

Paramount’s Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles took fourth place with $0.361 million. The blockbuster franchise re-launch fell 80 percent from Sunday and a steep 90 percent from last Monday. Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles continues to outpace expectations in a big way with $175.01 million in 32 days.

Universal’s As Above/So Below rounded out Monday’s top five with $0.318 million. The low-budget horror film was down 67 percent from Sunday and down 81 percent from last Monday. As Above/So Below has grossed $16.03 million in eleven days, which is on the low end of expectations.

If I Stay followed closely behind in sixth with $0.308 million. Warner’s low-budget drama was down 76 percent from Sunday and down 88 percent from last Monday. If I Stay has grossed a very solid $39.78 million in 18 days and is set to surpass the $40 million mark today.
