Disney’s Guardians of the Galaxy returned to the top of the daily box office on Monday with a daily take of $2.88 million. The blockbuster sci-fi superhero adaptation from Marvel was down 63 percent from Sunday and down 46 percent from last Monday. With more and more schools now back in session, midweek grosses in general came back down to Earth on Monday. Guardians of the Galaxy has grossed a stronger than expected $225.55 million in 18 days. That places the film 11 percent ahead of the $203.09 million 18-day take of Captain America: The Winter Soldier earlier this year.
Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles had to settle for a close second place finish with $2.80 million. Paramount’s high-profile franchise re-launch trailed Guardians of the Galaxy by just $83,282 for the day. Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles fell 69 percent from Sunday and 58 percent from last Monday. The film continues to outpace expectations in a big way with $120.57 million through eleven days of release. Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles is currently running 19 percent ahead of the $101.19 million eleven-day gross of 2009’s G.I. Joe: The Rise of Cobra.
Fox’s Let’s Be Cops placed in third with $2.10 million. The low-budget action-comedy fell 60 percent from Sunday, which represented one of Monday’s better daily percentage holds among wide releases. Let’s Be Cops has grossed a very solid $28.32 million in its first six days. That is towards the lower end of pre-release expectations and places the film 21.5 percent behind the recent $36.09 million six-day take of Tammy. Let’s Be Cops will hope to hold up well going forward due in part to the lack of new comedies entering the marketplace over the next several weeks.
Lionsgate’s The Expendables 3 continued its disappointing performance on Monday with a fourth place take of $1.32 million. The third installment of the ensemble action franchise starring Sylvester Stallone was down a concerning 69 percent from Sunday’s performance. The Expendables 3 has grossed just $17.20 million in its first four days of release. The film is performing below its scaled back expectations and is running 45 percent behind the $31.38 million four-day start of 2012’s The Expendables 2.
The Giver rounded out Monday’s top five with $1.31 million. The young adult sci-fi adaptation from The Weinstein Company trailed The Expendables 3 by a very slim $7,936 for the day. The Giver fell 58 percent from Sunday, which represented the day’s best daily percentage hold among wide releases. With a four-day start of $13.62 million, The Giver is running towards the low end of expectations and 15 percent ahead of the $11.80 million four-day take of last year’s The Host.
