Lionsgate reports that The Hunger Games: Mockingjay – Part 1 earned an estimated $14.55 million on Wednesday, up 20 percent from Tuesday. That brings the sequel’s domestic tally to $157.56 million through six days of release–24 percent off the pace of last year’s Catching Fire.
Fox/DreamWorks’ Penguins of Madagascar bowed to an estimated $6.25 million for its opening day yesterday. That’s generally on par with The Muppets‘ $6.5 million pre-Thanksgiving Wednesday opening three years ago, and 29 percent ahead of DreamWorks’ Rise of the Guardians pre-Thanksgiving first day take of $4.8 million.
Warner Bros. reports that Horrible Bosses 2 took in an estimated $4.25 million on Wednesday, including Tuesday’s $1 million from early shows. With no R-rated comedy sequels having opened over Thanksgiving weekend in the recent past, comparisons this early may be futile. That being said, the best samples may be that of last year’s Anchorman: The Legend Continues ($8.1 million opening Wednesday, one week before Christmas) and 2008’s Four Christmases ($6.1 million opening Wednesday before Thanksgiving). Warner Bros. also reports the Bosses sequel earned a “B+” CinemaScore.
Disney’s Big Hero 6 posted $4.18 million yesterday, up 28 percent from Tuesday. The toon’s domestic total now stands at $145.4 million.
Rounding out the top five, Interstellar added $3.17 million on Wednesday for a 31 percent increase from Tuesday. Christopher Nolan’s space epic has now taken in $128.25 million domestically up to this point.
