Twitter Futures – ‘Captain America’ regains lead

Saturday Morning Update: After relinquishing its lead to Suicide Squad for a week Captain America: Civil War reclaimed its mantle as the most talked about film on Twitter this past week, a position its held for four of the last five weeks. Not only is it miles ahead of its predecessor in terms of buzz, but it actually is not that far of off Avengers: Age Of Ultron which had 261,116 tweets the same distance out. In our latest long range forecast we have bumped up our predictions for this to $200 million opening weekend which would be a huge triumph for the franchise.

Suicide Squad surrendered the top spot with its numbers waning after its massive trailer buzz the week before. Amazingly, even though the film features many largely unknown super villains and a b-list cast (save for Will Smith of course) it has managed to stay in the top 10 every week of top buzz getters in 2016. Captain America: Civil War is the only other yet unreleased 2016 film to match that feat.

Ratchet & Clank made the list of number three, giving it a spot in the top five for two weeks running. Unfortunately its still more thanks to its latest video game release than their upcoming feature film debut. The lack of direct buzz about the film has us predicting a mid single-digit opening for the adaptation.

The Magnificent Seven showed off its first trailer on April 20th which saw it reel in 15,359 tweets on the day. The first trailer for Denzel Washington’s last film The Equalizer had just over 2,500 tweet back in the Summer of 2014 by comparison. Of course Seven has bundles of recognizable faces included mr hot-right-now Chris Pratt which greatly increase its visibility. The film will have a big target on it from fans of the original masterpiece who are already arguing that the film should have been left alone and not remade (Ben-Hur has a lot of similar detractors). At any rate it gets a solid thumbs up for its early reception numbers.
