NORTH AMERICA: ‘The Boss’ Still In Charge With $1.40M Wednesday, ‘Batman v Superman’ Crosses $300M On Day 20 With $1.25M

Universal’s The Boss grossed $1.40 million on Wednesday to hang onto first place at the daily box office.  The Melissa McCarthy led R-rated comedy fell a sharp 39 percent over Tuesday’s $2.33 million.  The Boss continues to outpace expectations with $28.95 million through six days of release.  That places the film 25 percent behind the $38.60 million six-day start of last year’s Spy (which had the added advantage of stronger early summer midweek grosses) and 20 percent less than the $36.09 million six-day start of 2014’s TammySpy and Tammy fell 26.2 percent and 24 percent respectively on their first Wednesday after release. Given the initial performance of The Boss, McCarthy continues to remain one of the more consistent box office draws in recent years.

Warner’s Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice held steady in second place with $1.25 million.  The blockbuster 3D superhero film starring Ben Affleck and Henry Cavill was down 33 percent over Tuesday and down a sharp 56 percent from last Wednesday. This Wednesday tally for Batman v Superman saw it reach the $300 million domestic milestone with a 20-day gross of $301.20 million.  The film is still running slightly ahead of last year’s Furious 7, which had a 20-day take of $300.53 million. By comparison, The Dark Knight and The Dark Knight Returns reached the $300 million milestone after 10 and 12 days respectively.

Disney’s Zootopia took in $0.725 million to remain in third place.  The blockbuster 3D computer animated film fell 31.7 percent over Tuesday and decreased 51.6 percent from last Wednesday.  Zootopia is also on the verge of reaching the $300 million domestic mark, as the film has grossed a massive $298.57 million in 41 days.  The film it set to pass $300 million on Friday, when Disney will also look to continue its strong start to 2016 with the release of The Jungle Book.

Universal’s My Big Fat Greek Wedding 2 continued to claim fourth with $0.459 million.  The PG-13 rated comedy sequel starring and written by Nia Vardalos was up down 32.8 percent over Tuesday and down 48.4 percent from last Wednesday.  My Big Fat Greek Wedding 2 continues to perform towards the higher end of expectations with a healthy 20-day take of $48.39 million.

Hardcore Henry rounded out the day’s unchanged top five with $0.328 million.  The low-budget action film from STX Entertainment experienced a 39.2 percent decline over Tuesday.  However, in the bigger picture Hardcore Henry is still performing softly with a five-day start of just $6.40 million, as pre-release excitement for the film’s trailer hasn’t transferred over to the box office.
