Universal’s Furious 7 took in $13.31 million on Tuesday to easily lead the daily box office for a fifth consecutive day. The well-received seventh installment of the popular franchise featuring Vin Diesel, Dwayne Johnson and the late Paul Walker was down a slim 5 percent from Monday. In addition to strong word of mouth, Tuesday’s hold was likely helped out a bit from Monday’s performance being deflated slightly due to the competition from the NCAA Men’s Basketball Championship game. Furious 7 has grossed a massive $174.51 million in just five days. That represents the eighth largest five-day start of all-time and already makes the film the highest grossing release of 2015 thus far domestically. The film is running an extremely impressive 61 percent stronger than the $108.22 five-day start of last year’s Captain America: The Winter Soldier and 39.5 percent ahead of the $125.07 million five-day take of 2013’s Fast & Furious 6.
Home held steady in second place with $4.32 million. In the process, the 3D computer animated film from Fox and DreamWorks Animation surpassed the $100 million mark on Tuesday. Home was down just 5 percent from Monday and down 6 percent from last Tuesday, as the film continues to be helped out by the post-Easter midweek frame. Home continues to exceed expectations in a big way with a twelve-day take of $104.13 million. That places the film 6.5 percent ahead of the $97.76 million twelve-day take of 2013’s The Croods.
Cinderella continued to claim third place with $1.81 million. Disney’s blockbuster fairy tale adaptation was down only 2 percent from Monday and down 15 percent from last Tuesday. Cinderella has grossed a strong $170.79 million in 26 days. The film is running 10 percent behind the $189.94 million 26-day take of last year’s Maleficent. Cinderella has stabilized nicely over the past week and will hope to hold up well throughout the month of April.
Warner’s Get Hard took in $1.57 million to remain in fourth. The R-rated comedy starring Will Ferrell and Kevin Hart was up a healthy 13 percent over Monday, but still down 48.5 percent from last Tuesday. Get Hard has obviously taken a big hit from the added presence of Furious 7 in the marketplace. Get Hard surpassed the $60 million mark yesterday and has grossed $60.17 million in twelve days, which is towards the lower end of expectations.
Lionsgate’s The Divergent Series: Insurgent rounded out the day’s unchanged top five with $1.29 million. The second installment of the young adult series starring Shailene Woodley was up 2 percent from Monday and down 41 percent from last Tuesday. Insurgent has grossed $106.06 million in 19 days, which places the film 8 percent behind the $115.83 million 19-day take of last year’s Divergent.
