Guardians of the Galaxy took in $2.11 million on Tuesday to lead the daily box office once again. The blockbuster sci-fi superhero adaptation from Disney and Marvel was up 27 percent over Monday and down a very solid 40 percent from last Tuesday. Guardians of the Galaxy has grossed a massive $255.23 million in 26 days. That currently ranks the film as the third highest grossing release of 2014 thus far domestically (behind only Captain America: The Winter Soldier and The Lego Movie). Guardians of the Galaxy is now just $4.54 million away from surpassing the $259.77 million final domestic gross of Captain America: The Winter Soldier for first place.
Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles grossed $1.66 million to remain in second. Paramount’s successful franchise re-launch increased 28 percent over Monday and fell 53 percent from last Tuesday. Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles continues to exceed expectations in a big way with $148.49 million through 19 days of release. The film is now just $1.51 million away from reaching the $150 million domestic mark and is set to reach the milestone on Thursday.
Warner’s If I Stay held steady in third place with $1.54 million. The low-budget drama starring Chloë Grace Moretz was up a solid 21 percent over Monday, though that also represented the day’s poorest daily percentage hold among wide releases. If I Stay continues to perform towards the lower end of expectations with a five-day start of $18.48 million. That places the film essentially on par with the $18.41 million five-day take of last year’s Carrie.
Let’s Be Cops followed in fourth place with $1.30 million. Fox’s low-budget action-comedy was up 27 percent over Monday and down 48 percent from last Tuesday. Let’s Be Cops has grossed a very solid $47.39 million through two weeks of release and is set to surpass the $50 million domestic mark on Friday.
It was a very close three-way race for fifth place on Tuesday between The Giver, Sin City: A Dame to Kill For and The Expendables 3. The Weinstein Company’s The Giver led the trio with $0.773 million, fellow Weinstein Company release Sin City: A Dame to Kill For followed in sixth with $0.765 million and Lionsgate’s The Expendables 3 landed in seventh with $0.758 million. Respective total grosses stand at $28.73 million for The Expendables 3 in twelve days, at $25.17 million for The Giver in twelve days and at just $7.69 million for Sin City: A Dame to Kill For in five days.
