Disney’s The Jungle Book continued to soar on Monday with a first place take of $7.02 million. The 3D live-action computer animated hybrid directed by Jon Favreau was down 77 percent from Sunday. Yesterday’s percentage decline is a further indication of the film’s strong appeal with family audiences. The Jungle Book is outpacing its already lofty expectations with a four-day start of $110.28 million. That places the film a very impressive 29 percent ahead of the $85.43 million four-day take of 2013’s Oz: The Great and Powerful (which fell 71 percent on its first Monday to gross $6.32 million). Given its strong early word of mouth and terrific critical reviews, The Jungle Book is likely to display stronger holding power than Disney’s previous blockbuster live-action adaptations have in the recent past.
Overseas, The Jungle Book took in an estimated $14.0 million on Monday. The film passed both the $200 million overseas mark and the $300 million global mark yesterday. Respective total grosses to date stand at $203.9 million overseas and at $314.2 million globally. Key overseas grosses to date by territory include $54.1 million in China, $22.3 million in India, $15.4 million in the United Kingdom and $14.9 million in Russia.
Barbershop: The Next Cut claimed second place on Tuesday with $1.37 million. The Ice Cube led comedy sequel from Warner Bros., New Line and MGM declined 73 percent from Sunday’s performance. Barbershop: The Next Cut continues to perform in line with expectations with a solid four-day start of $21.61 million. Without taking into account ticket price inflation, Barbershop: The Next Cut is currently running 15.5 percent behind the $25.56 million four-day gross of 2004’s Barbershop 2: Back in Business (which fell 76 percent on its first Monday to gross $1.32 million).
Universal’s The Boss grossed $0.725 million to take third. The Melissa McCarthy led R-rated comedy fell 70 percent from Sunday and a sharp 56 percent from last Monday. The Boss has grossed a solid $40.87 million through eleven days of release, but thus far isn’t holding up as well as McCarthy’s films typically do. The film is running 30 percent behind the $58.29 million eleven-day gross of last year’ Spy.
Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice followed in fourth place with $0.650 million. Warner’s blockbuster 3D superhero film starring Ben Affleck and Henry Cavill declined 74 percent from Sunday and sharp 56 percent from last Monday. Batman v Superman has grossed $311.98 million in 25 days, but continues to display poor holding power.
Fellow blockbuster Zootopia rounded out Monday’s top five with $0.553 million. The 3D computer animated film from Disney was down 74 percent from Sunday and down a slim 29 percent from last Monday. Zootopia has grossed an exceptional $307.94 million in 46 days and currently trails Batman v Superman by just $4.04 million.
