Jurassic World rounded out its historic first week at the box office with a first place take of $17.82 million on Thursday. The Chris Pratt led 3D blockbuster sequel from Universal and Legendary declined 10 percent from Wednesday’s performance. Yesterday’s percentage hold wasn’t as relatively impressive as many of the film’s other daily holds thus far, but that was quite understandable given how strongly the film held up throughout the week as a whole, especially for a film of this size. Jurassic World took in a record-breaking $296.21 million in its first seven days of release. That was an extremely impressive $26.19 million and 10 percent stronger than the $270.02 million seven-day start of previous record holder 2012’s Marvel’s The Avengers. Given both strong word of mouth and strong daily percentage holds thus far, no new direct competition for action fans and Father’s Day on Sunday, Jurassic World looks to be in store for a terrific second weekend hold.
Fox’s Spy held steady in a distant second with $1.68 million. The Melissa McCarthy led comedy was down 6 percent from Wednesday and down just 28 percent from last Thursday. Spy placed in second for the week with $22.94 million. That represented a 44 percent decline from the film’s opening week performance and brings the film’s two-week total to $63.87 million. Spy is currently running an underwhelming 20 percent behind the $79.60 million two week take of 2013’s Identity Thief.
Warner’s San Andreas grossed $1.13 million to remain in third. The Dwayne Johnson led 3D disaster film decreased a slim 3.5 percent from Wednesday and 36 percent from last Thursday. San Andreas took third place for the week with $15.68 million. The film was down a sharp 56 percent from the previous frame, but still continues to exceed expectations with a strong three-week take of $123.99 million.
Focus’ Insidious: Chapter 3 remained in fourth place with $0.876 million. The third installment of the low-budget horror franchise from Gramercy and Blumhouse Productions fell 6 percent from Wednesday and a very solid 34 percent from last Thursday. Insidious: Chapter 3 placed in fourth for the week with $11.19 million. That represented a very sharp 63 percent decline from the film’s opening week performance and brings the film’s two-week total to $41.26 million.
Pitch Perfect 2 rounded out the day’s unchanged top five with $0.721 million. Universal’s successful musical comedy sequel starring Anna Kendrick took fifth place this week with $8.73 million. The film was down a healthy 24 percent from the previous frame and has grossed a very impressive $174.16 million through five weeks of release.
