The Hunger Games: Mockingjay – Part 1 grossed $12.13 million on Tuesday to easily top the daily box office for a fifth straight day. The third installment of Lionsgate’s blockbuster franchise starring Jennifer Lawrence increased 35 percent over Monday’s performance. Daily increases in general were especially strong on Tuesday thanks in part to the approaching Thanksgiving holiday. In comparison, last year’s The Hunger Games: Catching Fire increased 29.5 percent on its first Tuesday to gross $15.96 million. Mockingjay- Part 1 surpassed the $140 million mark on Tuesday and has grossed $143.01 million in five days. While Mockingjay – Part 1 is off to the largest five-day start of 2014, the film is also performing below pre-release expectations and is running a significant 23 percent behind the massive $186.36 million five-day start of Catching Fire.
Disney’s Big Hero 6 held steady in second with $3.27 million. The 3D computer animated film from Walt Disney Animation Studios held up especially well yesterday, as it was up 50 percent over Monday and up 93 percent over last Tuesday. Big Hero 6 also surpassed the $140 million mark yesterday and has grossed $141.20 million in 19 days. That places the film 12 percent ahead of the $126.50 million 19-day take of 2012’s Wreck-It Ralph. Even with added competition from Fox’s Penguins of Madagascar, Big Hero 6 is highly likely to hold up very well over the Thanksgiving holiday frame.
Paramount’s Interstellar took in $2.42 million to remain in third place. The Christopher Nolan directed sci-fi film increased 40 percent over Monday and was down a slim 9 percent from last Tuesday. Interstellar has grossed $125.08 million after 19 days of wide release. That places the film 27 percent behind the $171.22 million 19-day take of last year’s Thor: The Dark World. Interstellar should be able to stabilize this weekend thanks to the holiday frame and continued IMAX grosses.
Dumb and Dumber To grossed $1.66 million to continue to claim fourth. Universal’s long awaited comedy sequel starring Jim Carrey and Jeff Daniels was up 39 percent over Monday and down 31 percent from last Tuesday. Dumb and Dumber To surpassed the $60 million mark yesterday and has grossed $60.58 million in twelve days. The film is likely to continue to fall off quickly over the holiday frame, especially with added competition from Warner’s Horrible Bosses 2.
The Theory of Everything continued to perform well in limited release on Tuesday with $0.215 million from 140 locations. That gave the awards season hopeful from Focus a per-location average of $1,533 for the day, which was the second highest per-location average among films in the top ten yesterday (behind only Mockingjay – Part 1). The Theory of Everything has grossed $3.17 million through 19 days of platform release. The film will be playing in 749 locations today and on Thursday and in 802 locations beginning on Friday.
