Fox’s The Maze Runner took in $2.39 million on Tuesday to lead the daily box office for a fifth consecutive day. The modestly budgeted young adult adaptation was up an encouraging 28 percent over Monday’s performance. The Maze Runner has grossed $36.77 million in five days, which represents a strong start, especially with the film’s cost in mind. The film is running in line with expectations and 19 percent ahead of the $30.99 million five-day start of last year’s Ender’s Game.
A Walk Among the Tombstones held steady in second place with $1.26 million. Universal’s modestly budgeted action thriller starring Liam Neeson was up 31 percent over Monday. A Walk Among the Tombstones is still performing a bit below pre-release expectations (and soft by Neeson’s recent box office standards) with a five-day start of $14.98 million. That places the film 34 percent behind the $22.74 million five-day take of 2012’s The Grey.
Warner’s This Is Where I Leave You grossed $1.21 million to remain in third. The modestly budgeted comedy starring Jason Bateman and Tina Fey increased an impressive 40 percent over Monday. This Is Where I Leave You has grossed $13.63 million in five days. That is towards the lower end of the film’s modest expectations and places the film 20 percent behind the $17.04 million five-day start of 2011’s The Change-Up.
Sony’s No Good Deed took in $0.69 million to continue to claim fourth. The low-budget thriller starring Idris Elba and Taraji P. Henson was up a modest 17 percent over Monday and down a sharp 62 percent from last Tuesday. While it is proving to be quite front-loaded, No Good Deed is still performing well with a twelve-day take of $40.98 million.
Guardians of the Galaxy rounded out the day’s unchanged top five with $0.45 million. Disney’s blockbuster sci-fi superhero film was up 23 percent from Monday and down 43 percent from last Tuesday. Guardians of the Galaxy has grossed $314.54 million in 54 days and is now just $3.87 million away from reaching the $318.41 million final unadjusted domestic gross of 2008’s Iron Man.
