Paramount’s The SpongeBob Movie: Sponge Out of Water took in $2.29 million on Tuesday to lead the daily box office for a fifth consecutive day. In the process the 3D animated live-action hybrid film surpassed the $60 million mark yesterday. The SpongeBob Movie was down 8 percent from Monday, though it should be noted that family films in general experienced daily percentage declines on Tuesday. The SpongeBob Movie continues to exceed expectations in a very big way with a strong $60.16 million in five days. That places the film a very impressive 71 percent ahead of the $35.26 million five-day start of 2004’s The SpongeBob Square Pants Movie and 20.5 percent behind the $75.68 million five-day take of last year’s The LEGO Movie.
Warner’s American Sniper held steady in second place with $1.77 million. The blockbuster Clint Eastwood directed film starring Bradley Cooper was up 12 percent over Monday and down 39 percent from last Tuesday. American Sniper has grossed a massive $284.75 million after 26 days of wide release. That leaves the film just $15.25 million away from becoming the third release of 2014 to reach the $300 million domestic milestone.
Fellow Warner Bros. release Jupiter Ascending took in $1.53 million to remain in third. The expensive 3D sci-fi film from The Wachowskis starring Channing Tatum and Mila Kunis was up 19 percent over Monday. Jupiter Ascending surpassed the $20 million mark yesterday and has grossed a very disappointing $21.20 million in its first five days. That places the film essentially on par with the $20.55 million five-day start of 2008’s Speed Racer.
Seventh Son placed in fourth with $0.659 million. The long-delayed 3D fantasy film from Universal was up 21 percent over Monday. Seventh Son continues to perform on the low end of its very modest pre-release expectations with a five-day start of just $8.42 million. The film is currently running 47 percent behind the $15.97 million five-day take of 2013’s R.I.P.D.
