The Hunger Games: Mockingjay – Part 1 took in an estimated $11.05 million on Thursday to lead the daily box office for a seventh consecutive day. The third installment of Lionsgate’s blockbuster franchise starring Jennifer Lawrence was down 24 percent from Thursday. In comparison, last year’s The Hunger Games: Catching Fire fell 28 percent on Thanksgiving Day to gross $14.95 million. Mockingjay – Part 1 has grossed $168.61 million through its first week of release. That places the film 24 percent behind the massive $222.12 million seven-day start of Catching Fire. Mockingjay – Part 1 has grossed an estimated $25.6 million on Wednesday and Thursday and looks to be headed for a five-day weekend take in the area of $79 million based on past Thanksgiving weekend trends.
Penguins of Madagascar placed in a distant second with an estimated $3.95 million. The 3D computer animated film from Fox and DreamWorks Animation was down 37 percent from Wednesday. Family films tend to fall off sharply on Thanksgiving Day, but the daily decline for Penguins of Madagascar was even larger than usual for a family film on Thanksgiving. Penguins of Madagascar has grossed an estimated $10.20 million in two days. That places the film 19 percent ahead of the $8.57 million two-day take of 2012’s Rise of the Guardians and 17 percent behind the $12.28 million two-day start of 2011’s The Muppets. Penguins of Madagascar currently appears headed for a five-day start in the neighborhood of $37 million.
Horrible Bosses 2 grossed $3.06 million to land in third. The comedy sequel from Warner Bros. was down 28 percent from Wednesday’s opening day performance. Yesterday’s percentage decline was a concerning sign, as films aimed at adult audiences tend to hold up better on Thanksgiving Day. Horrible Bosses 2 is off to a modest two-day start of just $7.31 million. That places the film a very disappointing 51 percent behind the $14.98 million two-day start of 2008’s Four Christmases. Unless Horrible Bosses 2 rebounds in an unexpectedly big way today, the film appears to be on course for a lackluster five-day debut in the area of $24 million.
Disney’s Big Hero 6 followed very closely behind in fourth place with an estimated $3.056 million. That was down 27 percent from Wednesday and up 166 percent over last Thursday. Big Hero 6 placed in second for the week with $32.82 million. That was down just 18 percent from the previous frame and brings the film’s 21-day total to $148.44 million. Big Hero 6 is currently taking advantage of the slower than expected start of Penguins of Madagascar and has grossed an estimated $7.24 million on Wednesday and Thursday. That places the film on course for a five-day weekend gross in the neighborhood of $26.5 million.
Paramount’s Interstellar rounded out Thursday’s top five with an estimated $3.04 million. The Christopher Nolan directed sci-fi film held up much better than other films in the top five on Thursday, as it fell just 4 percent from Wednesday. Interstellar placed in third for the week with $25.69 million. That represented a 30.5 percent decline from the previous week and brings the film’s domestic total to $131.29 million after 21 days of wide release. Interstellar has grossed an estimated $6.21 million on Wednesday and Thursday and appears to be headed for a five-day holiday take in the area of $21 million.
The Theory of Everything continued to perform well in limited release on Thursday with an estimated $0.727 million from 749 locations. The awards season hopeful from Focus was up 17 percent over Wednesday. The Theory of Everything has grossed an estimated $1.35 million on Wednesday and Thursday. The film’s 21-day total stands at $4.52 million.
