Paramount’s Scream 7 over-performed against expectations, giving theaters a much-needed boost during the winter doldrums as it shot to $64.1M. This is a massive 50%+ year-over-year jump from this slot in 2025 when Captain America: Brave New World led during its dwindling third frame. This was also another big win for a legacy horror franchise after last year’s $100M+ grosses for The Conjuring and Final Destination, proving some genre IP still has the juice.

$64.1M 3-Day Opening Weekend | $97.2M Global Total

Paramount Pictures’ legacy sequel Scream 7 surged past expectations with an estimated $64.1M from 3,540 screens for an $18,107 Per Screen Average at #1. An estimated $5.5M came from 412 domestic IMAX screens, with a further $1.6M from 326 screens in 63 international markets, with PLFs in general accounting for 40% of total gross to date.

This is the biggest debut of 2026 to date by a big margin, and marked a franchise-best opening as well as the biggest ever domestic opening for a February horror release above Hannibal ($58M), Shutter Island ($41M), and the Friday the 13th remake ($40.57M). This is already above the lifetime total of black sheep entry Scream 4 ($38.18M), on pace to top 2022’s Scream ($81.6M total) before next weekend and eventually franchise peak Scream VI ($108.39M).

Here’s how the 3-Day looked, including $7.8M in Thursday previews…

  • Friday – $29.2M
  • Saturday – $21.7M
  • Sunday – $13.2M

Audiences were split 54% male/46% female, with 62% of ticket buyers over age 25. Surprisingly only 13% of that number were over 45, meaning this success was less about nostalgia for the original trilogy and more the timeless appeal of Ghostface and the meta slasher milieu. This is similar to the perennial appeal of something like Jurassic.

Here’s how demographics looked…

  • 53% Caucasian
  • 26% Hispanic
  • 15% Black
  • 4% Other
  • 2% Asian

A hypothetical fan backlash to the drop outs of former stars Melissa Barrera and Jenna Ortega proved unfounded, with the absence of Neve Campbell in the previous film clearly making the audience’s hearts grow fonder. One expects the franchise could produce a similar buzz should Barrera and Ortega return for the next one, but this is clearly Campbell’s franchise.

Spyglass Media Group Chairman and CEO Gary Barber issued a statement on the win:

“This historic, franchise record-breaking box office performance is a testament to the enduring legacy created by our director Kevin Williamson 30 years ago, led by the incomparable Neve Campbell, breakout star Isabel May, legacy stalwart Courteney Cox and the entire cast. We applaud everyone at Paramount Pictures, especially Josh Greenstein and Dana Goldberg, who have been tremendously supportive since day one and were committed to making Scream 7 a priority tentpole for the studio, alongside Josh Goldstine who designed a bold marketing campaign and Shaun Barber who eventized the theatrical release with premium formats and a franchise-first, in IMAX. We are proud to celebrate the success of the seventh installment with our good friends and producing partners William Sherak, James Vanderbilt and Paul Neinstein at Project X. We are truly grateful to audiences around the world who enthusiastically showed up to theaters, ready for another thrilling Ghostface experience.”

Scream 7 also marked the largest international launch in the franchise’s history, taking in $33.1M from 52 markets, 35% above Scream VI for the same group of markets. That represents 90% of the international footprint, with Singapore, Malaysia, and Hong Kong releasing next week. Top 3 markets are the UK ($5.3M), France ($4.2M), and Mexico ($3M). Global total so far is $97.2M.

Other Notable Performances

20th Century’s Avatar: Fire and Ash quietly topped $400M domestic this frame, coming in at #10 with $401.2M in its 11th week, surpassing Frozen ($400.95M). Global total on the James Cameron epic is $1.47B, making it the 15th highest grosser WW above Top Gun: Maverick ($1.45B) and below Furious 7 ($1.5B). Still no word on whether the movie has crossed the threshold to make a planned fourth and fifth movie viable.

Next Weekend

The last March theatrical bow for a Pixar film was the ill-time Onward,($61.55M) which had the misfortune to bow just as the COVID 19 pandemic hit fever pitch. Still, the studio is taking another swing at the late-winter corridor with Hoppers, an original about a girl who projects her mind into a robotic beaver in order to communicate with wildlife. Warner Bros. is also giving us The Bride!, a 1930’s-set take on the Mary Shelley Frankenstein myth starring Christian Bale and Jessie Buckley which has been praised as a “big swing” coming out of the premiere in London.
