Key Takeaways

Total 3-Day Weekend Gross:
$172,625,804 | +47.8% Last Week / -41.87% Weekend 21, 2025

While it failed to recapture the excitement of Memorial Day Star Wars releases of the past, The Mandalorian and Grogu got off to a slow-but-solid start during what is expected to be a slow couple of weeks before studios roll out big guns like Toy Story 5 and the next Minions entry. “Slow” given expectations for this franchise, but “solid” given enthusiastic word-of-mouth from the younger audience it courted. Year-over-year was a walloping compared to 2025’s “Lilo: Impossible” Memorial Day when just two films (Lilo & Stitch and the final Mission: Impossible) earned $210M over the 3-Day. Still, the 2026 Memorial Day is far better than 2024 when Furiosa failed to ignite and the overall 3-Day was $101.7M.

Star Wars: The Mandalorian and Grogu, Disney and Lucasfilm’s first theatrical Star Wars in nearly seven years, got off to a slow start with an $81.96M 3-Day performance on 4,300 screens for a $19,060 Per Screen Average. The 4-Day Memorial Day projection is currently at $102M. This marks the lowest opening in the franchise’s modern Disney era, behind the bow of Solo: A Star Wars Story eight years ago ($84.4M 3-Day, $103M 4-Day). It is also behind the $108.4M bow of Revenge of the Sith in 2005 and on par with Attack of the Clones in 2002 ($80M).

Here’s how the 4-Day looked, including $12M for Thursday previews…

  • Friday – $33M
  • Saturday – $25.5M
  • Sunday- $23.46M
  • Monday – $20M projected

Lucasfilm was leveraging the popularity of The Mandalorian streaming series (1.3 billion hours streamed) alongside a more targeted focus on the <12 crowd. While this may not have pleased the grown-ups (RT critical was 62%, below Solo‘s 69% and the same as Attack of the Clones), RT audience score was 89% making it the best for a Disney Star Wars movie or even the Prequel Trilogy. CinemaScore was “A-” (same as the prequels and Solo) while PostTrak earned 5 out of 5 stars for parents and kids (GA 4.5 stars). Between bountiful merch sales as well as the fact that Mandalorian and Grogu‘s reported budget is lower than all previous Disney entries, the studio could still come out winning on this movie. Next weekend may hold strong thanks to word of mouth and the lack of new tentpole competition, so do not count this movie out yet.

Audiences were 63% male vs 37% female. PLFs were responsible for 53% of the total box office, including a $12M 3-Day and $14.8M 4-Day in the IMAX format of which almost half of the film was shot in. IMAX is projecting a $25.8M global haul for Mando.

Overseas, The Mandalorian and Grogu made $63M from 51 material territories over the 3-Day, opening at #1 in all material markets. Korea bows next frame. The film feels custom-made for foreign territories, with the two leads either non-speaking or wearing helmets most of the time, making dubbing easier. A large chunk of the movie has little to no dialogue, even for a tentpole, so we can see this holding well in the global market. Top 3 key markets are the UK ($7.1M), Germany ($6.5M), and China ($5.3M). Fellow spin-offs Rogue One and Solo earned slightly less overseas than domestically.

Other Notable Performances

Focus Features’ ultra-low-budget horror hit Obsession made the rare +30% bump up in gross during its second frame, earning $22.4M over the 3-Day from 2,655 theaters and a projected $28.2M for the 4-Day, bringing the domestic total to $58.5M, already above fellow micro-budget hit Iron Lung‘s $40.85M. This cements auteur Curry Barker’s status as the newest horror hit-maker, with the film sitting at #2.

Meanwhile, more seasoned Hollywood horror helmer André Øvredal’s Passenger debuted at #6 with an estimated $8.7M from 2,534 locations for a $3,433 PSA ($10.5M projected for the 4-Day). That’s better than the director’s previous The Last Voyage of the Demeter at $6.5M opening/$13.6M total, but at 45% RT critical, 52% audience score, and “B-” CinemaScore don’t expect this Passenger to ride much longer at the box office.

Next Week

The Mandalorian and Grogu gets a wide berth for box office domination, with family comedy The Breadwinner and liminal terrifier Backrooms (currently surging in our pre-release tracking) filling the void. Tri-Star’s The Breadwinner stars family-friendly comedian Nate Bargatze in a Mr. Mom-like scenario where he becomes a stay-at-home dad. Meanwhile, A24 delivers the long-running internet phenomenon Backrooms to the big screen, with Chiwetel Ejiofor co-starring and a lot of creepy yellow walls.
