Twitter Futures: ‘Ghostbusters’ Land in First

Friday Morning Update: Ghostbusters took top spot over the past week on Twitter with 66,975 tweets. This was actually its first week on top of the upcoming leader board and while the overall number might be low (it was the second lowest leading week total in the last 16 months) its impressive that its still beating the competition handily. Sentiment remains poor for the film which has managed to register more positive tweets than negative only one day in the past week. Its become somewhat of a punching bag for many tweeters and its doesn’t help when high profile people call it a bad idea (see Donald Trump).

X-Men: Apocalypse was the second place finisher with 58,932 tweets on the week. X-Men opens a full 6 weeks before Ghostbusters but the fact that it isn’t atop the list was somewhat surprising. X-Men has had a muted leadup to release compared to Deadpool (244,868), Batman vs Superman (157,507) and Captain America: Civil War (226,498) but its still handily ahead of its predecessor Days Of Future Past which had 25,893 tweets over the same period. Looks like ~$100 million is very possible for Apocalypse but it likely won’t be approaching the huge triple digit numbers of the three aforementioned films.

Lastly, Maze Runner: The Death Cure joined the top five for the first time on the week with 16,149 after seeing the largest jump on the list. Unfortunately the impetus for the move was reaction to the news that the film’s filming has been further postponed because of serious injuries to star Dylan O’Brien which were more serious than originally thought.
