The arcade game fighting champion couldn’t take down Meryl Streep as The Devil Wears Prada 2 proved to be the perfect holdover for Mother’s Day over Warner Bros.’ opening weekend of Mortal Kombat II. The good news for theaters is that the combined might of both tentpoles skyrocketed the year-over-year from this time last year, when Thunderbolts* underperformed in the absence of new blockbusters.
- Top Title: The Devil Wears Prada 2 (20th Century) | $43M / 4,200 Screens / $10,238 PSA | Week 2

1. The Devil Wears Prada 2
20th Century Studios | Week 2
$43M 3-Day Weekend | $144.8M Domestic Total
$433.2M Global Total
In its sophomore frame, 20th Century Studios’ star-studded sequel The Devil Wears Prada 2 managed a flawless victory against the blood-soaked mayhem of upstart challenger Mortal Kombat II. It took in an estimated $43M from 4,200 locations (700 more than MKII), for a $10,238 per-screen average, thanks to a huge Mother’s Day boost on Sunday. Mortal Kombat II was $5M ahead of Prada 2 heading into Sunday, when Prada 2 ended up surpassing MKII by nearly doubling the WB title in Sunday’s estimates. The -44% drop from Frame 1 is almost identical to the original 2006 Prada, which dropped -45.5% in Frame 2.
Here’s how the 3-Day looked…
- Friday – $9.8M
- Saturday – $15.2M
- Sunday – $18M
Since the first film earned $124.7M total domestically, it’s fair to say we don’t have to do much comparing, since the first movie is in the dust earning-wise now that the sequel has earned $144.8M. This also takes it past the first Mama Mia! ($144.3M), making it Meryl Streep’s top grosser as headliner.
Overseas Devil Wears Prada 2 made $75.8M from 51 material territories, taking the global total to $433.2M as the #4 MPA international release of 2026. Top 3 markets are the UK ($28.5M), Italy ($28.2M), and Brazil ($22M).
2. Mortal Kombat II
Warner Bros. | New
$40M 3-Day Opening Weekend | $63M Global Total
Warner Bros.’ R-rated 5-years-later legacy sequel Mortal Kombat II came in right at the tail end of our forecasting panel’s range with $40M from 3,503 screens for an $11,419 PSA. While the screen average was better than Prada 2 and it had the PLF advantage (46% of that $40M came from PLFs, including $6.8M/17% from IMAX), the clear Mother’s Day priority for audiences was Meryl Streep over smashed skulls. The video game sequel may have scored a #1 debut in the next frame with no big tentpoles and out of the holiday proximity, but then it would have had only one weekend with those PLFs before The Mandalorian takes over its territory.
Here’s how the 3-Day looked, including $5.2M in Thursday previews…
- Friday – $17M
- Saturday – $13.5M
- Sunday – $9.5M
Here’s how demographics looked…
- 42% Caucasian
- 30% Hispanic
- 19% African-American
- 5% Asian
- 4% Native-American/Other
Rotten Tomatoes critical was a middling 65% alongside 89% audience rating, “B” CinemaScore, and 4 out of 5 PostTrak… all solid but nothing to write home about.

Overseas Mortal Kombat II was released in 78 markets on 31,000+ screens for a so-so $23M haul and $63M global weekend. The good news is it will absolutely top the first movie’s $42.3M domestic/$84.4M WW, but time will tell if that is enough to warrant another trip to the MK well. Top 3 territories were the UK ($2.2M), Mexico ($1.7M), and Australia ($1.6M).
Other Notable Performances
Amazon/MGM’s unconventional comedy/mystery The Sheep Detectives earned a place in the Top 5 at #4 with $15.9M. Led by Hugh Jackman, the film earned raves across the board with 93% critical and 96% audience on RT and an “A-” CinemaScore. With word-of-mouth like that, expect a solid hold next frame.
Paramount brought out the big guns with James Cameron co-directing a dazzling 3D concert movie with the title superstar in Billie Eilish: Hit Me Hard and Soft—The Tour. Rave reviews (93% critical, 99% audience, “A” CinemaScore) and a 3-D renaissance helped lift the title’s visibility, but the film still played as a fan-driven title, earning $7.5M from 2,613 screens for a #5 finish and a $2,870 PSA. That is comparable to Paramount’s 2012 concert movie Katy Perry: Part of Me, which opened to $7.1M before a $25.3M total.
Next Weekend
Holdovers will likely rule next week with smaller non-tentpoles opening in the pre-Memorial Day dead zone. Guy Ritchie directs yet another sexy action heist movie with yesterday’s stars (Henry Cavill, Jake Gyllenhaal) titled In the Grey. Internet comedian Curry Barker teams with Focus Features and Blumhouse for a Monkey’s paw style micro-budget horror film Obsession. Kara Young and Mallori Johnson play twins out for vengeance in Amazon/MGM’s thriller Is God Is.
