Long Range Forecast – June 5, 2026
Scary Movie 6 | Paramount Pictures
Domestic Opening Weekend Range: $43M – $53M
The Scary Movie franchise returns this June, looking for the same nostalgic reinvention that has helped bring ’90s slasher series like Scream, and I Know What You Did Last Summer back to theaters.
Though many ’90s/early ’00s properties across a different genres have had a big-screen rebirth of late, they’ve done so with varied results. On the horror side, the Scream franchise reached a box office peak with Scream 7 ($63.6M domestic opening). Released last May, Final Destination: Bloodlines outgrossed all of its series predecessors with a $51.6M opening ($138.2M domestic total). On the flip side is I Know What You Did Last Summer, which failed to connect with a non-horror crowd, opening to $12.7M last year. And while the 28 Days Later franchise had a decent comeback with 2025’s 28 Years Later ($30M domestic opening), it slowed down with 28 Years Later: The Bone Temple ($12.5M) and its offbeat take on the zombie franchise.
Horror is only one side of the equation for Scary Movie—there’s also comedy. We don’t have much by way of comps here, as the genre satire boom that the original Scary Movie kicked off has been DOA for a while. The currently running franchise that bears the most similarity with Scary Movie is Jackass: Both ensemble comedies from the early aughts, both released by Paramount, both combining comedy and horror (body horror, in Jackass‘ case), both incredibly stupid (in a good way), both with new movies in 2026. (Jackass: Best and Last opens on June 26.) Jackass returned to the big screen after a nine-year absence with Jackass Forever, which opened to $23.1M in early 2022.
A debut on the high end of our $43M – $53M opening weekend range puts Scary Movie in the ballpark of Final Destination: Bloodlines—not as big a box office champ as the rebooted Scream franchise, but something with a bit more impact than I Know What You Did Last Summer or 28 Years Later: The Bone Temple. A debut on the low end puts this new Scary Movie alongside the original Scary Movie, which had an opening weekend gross of $42.3M back in 2000.
