Cinema Cafe, a locally owned and independently operated dine-in cinema chain rooted in Virginia, proudly announces its 40th anniversary, marking four decades of serving guests “More Than A Movie.” Opened in 1986, Cinema Cafe has grown from a bold, two-screen concept into a cherished locals’ destination, now operating five locations and 31 screens across the Commonwealth. To celebrate this milestone, Cinema Cafe will host several months of special events, promotions, and surprises designed to thank the communities that have made its legacy possible.

From its earliest days, Cinema Cafe set out to redefine the moviegoing experience by pairing the magic of cinema with warm hospitality and full-service dining. That mission continues to evolve, now with luxury recliner seating, expanded food and bar menus, and an unwavering commitment to creating memorable moments for guests of all ages and tastes.

Cinema Cafe’s story began in May 1986, when founders John and Deborah Walker, along with partners Richard, Edward, and Jeffrey Kramer, opened a small twin-plex dine-in theater in Virginia Beach. Originally known as Cinema ‘N’ Drafthouse, the concept was ahead of its time, serving food and beer directly to guests while they enjoyed discounted second-run movies. What started as an innovative idea quickly became a local favorite, earning loyal fans who fondly remember the early days of “the Drafthouse.”

As the business evolved through the 1990s, the company embraced a more family-friendly atmosphere and reintroduced itself as Cinema Cafe. With that name change came a renewed focus on hospitality, community involvement, and a unique guest experience, values that continue to define the brand today. Over the years, Cinema Cafe expanded thoughtfully, remaining locally owned and deeply connected to the neighborhoods it serves.

Today, Cinema Cafe operates five locations across Virginia, including Virginia Beach, Chesapeake, and Chesterfield County outside the Richmond area, featuring 31 screens equipped with luxury power recliners, digital laser projection, Dolby surround sound, and in-theater full-service dining. While the technology and amenities have evolved, the heart of Cinema Cafe has remained the same: delivering welcoming, affordable, and memorable entertainment experiences for local movie fans. Founder John Walker said, “When we opened our first theater in 1986, we never imagined how many memories would be made inside Cinema Cafe. Staying local, listening to our guests, and taking pride in how we serve our communities has guided us for 40 years. We’re proud of where we’ve been, and even more excited about where we’re going.”

To commemorate its 40th Anniversary, Cinema Cafe will roll out a months-long slate of celebration in 2026. Guests can look forward to a nostalgic and fun-filled lineup, including:

  • Celebratory weekday food & drink specials, like BOGO pizzas and candy, now available for a limited time
  • A 40th Anniversary feature menu with some returning Cinema Cafe classics and fan-favorites, coming at the end of March
  • A discount 80’s throwback movie series celebrating the decade when Cinema Cafe first opened
  • Limited-edition commemorative merchandise created exclusively for the 40th anniversary
  • And more surprises throughout the year, designed to delight longtime fans and new guests alike

Each event and promotion will reflect Cinema Cafe’s signature blend of cinematic excellence, inviting hospitality, and community spirit, bringing generations together to create new memories. “Reaching 40 years is an incredible milestone, and it’s one we are honored to share with our guests and our communities,” added Caitlin Walker, Marketing Director for Cinema Cafe, “From the beginning, Cinema Cafe has been about more than showing movies. It’s about creating a place where people feel welcome, relaxed, and excited to spend time together. This anniversary year is our way of saying thank you to everyone who has been part of our story.”
