‘Despicable Me 3’ Claims Record-Setting Debut for an Animated Film in China

Despicable Me 3 began its theatrical run in China today with a $20.1 million bow, dethroning last year’s Minions by 17.5% to become the biggest opening for an animated movie in the country. Other than China, Despicable Me 3 has already set the record for the biggest opening day of all time for an animated film in Argentina, Brazil, Egypt, Estonia, Latvia, Lithuania, Middle East, Netherlands, Ukraine, and Venezuela.

The title entered its Chinese debut this morning with $286.8 million worldwide already in the bank–with international grosses representing $171.6 million of that total. Despicable Me 3 will also be expanding to France, Germany, Austria, Switzerland, Trinidad, and Iceland this weekend.  There are 15 markets left on the schedule in the coming months.

The opening day results in China propelled Illumination to $5 billion worldwide in its history, with leading titles such as Despicable Me ($546 million), Hop ($188.7 million), Dr. Seuss’ The Lorax ($350.8 million), Despicable Me 2 ($975.8 million), Minions ($1.167 billion), The Secret Life of Pets ($876.5 million), and Sing($633.2 million).
