Universal’s Fifty Shades of Grey grossed $2.27 million on Tuesday to continue to lead the daily box office. The successful erotic romantic drama increased 23 percent over Monday, but was still down 59 percent from last Tuesday. While it continues to be heavily front-loaded, Fifty Shades of Grey has grossed an impressive $133.27 million in twelve days. That places the film 50 percent ahead of the $88.93 million twelve-day take of 2010’s Valentine’s Day.
Fox’s Kingsman: The Secret Service held steady in second place with $1.89 million. The Matthew Vaughn directed graphic novel adaptation was up 31 percent over Monday and down a solid 42.5 percent from last Tuesday. Kingsman surpassed the $70 million mark yesterday and has grossed a stronger than expected $71.25 million in twelve days. The film is running an impressive 55 percent ahead of the $45.91 million twelve-day take of 2010’s Red.
McFarland, USA was up one spot and a strong 45 percent over Monday to move into third on Tuesday with $1.04 million. Disney’s well received sports drama starring Kevin Costner continues to perform towards the higher end of pre-release expectations with a five-day start of $12.78 million. That places McFarland, USA 7 percent ahead of the $11.91 million five-day take of last year’s Draft Day.
Warner’s American Sniper was down one spot to land in fourth place with $0.948 million. The blockbuster Clint Eastwood directed film starring Bradley Cooper was up 13 percent over Monday and down just 26 percent from last Tuesday. American Sniper has grossed a massive $321.79 million after 40 days of wide release, as it continues to move towards becoming the highest grossing release of 2014.
The SpongeBob Movie: Sponge Out of Water took in $0.892 million to remain in fifth. The successful 3D animated film from Paramount was up 24 percent from Monday and down a sharp 67.5 percent from last Tuesday. The SpongeBob Movie continues to exceed expectations with $127.85 million through 19 days of release.
The DUFF was up one spot and 37 percent over Monday to place in sixth with $0.662 million. The low-budget PG-13 rated comedy from CBS Films and Lionsgate continues to exceed expectations with $11.96 million in five days. The DUFF is running 18 percent ahead of the $10.13 million five-day start of last year’s That Awkward Moment.
Paramount’s Hot Tub Time Machine 2 was down one spot from Monday to finish in seventh with $0.595 million. The low-budget R-rated comedy sequel was up a modest 19 percent over Monday. Hot Tub Time Machine 2 has grossed a very disappointing $7.06 million in five days, which places the film 59 percent behind the $17.07 million five-day take of 2010’s Hot Tub Time Machine.
