Opening Weekend Forecast: £1-2 million
Theatrical Total Forecast: £3-4 million
U.K.-based cinema advertising company Pearl & Dean has released their predicted opening range for romantic drama Reminders of Him, opening in the U.K./Ireland market this weekend.
Starring Maika Monroe as a woman trying to rebuild her life after serving out a prison sentence, Reminders of Him is the third movie adaptation of a novel by Colleen Hooper. Adaptations of female-skewing novels are one of the hottest commodities on the big and small screen right now. December’s The Housemaid (based on the book by Freida McFadden) pulled in a whooping £31.8 million over Christmas and New Year’s, whilst shows like The Summer I Turned Pretty and Heated Rivalry have been burning up streaming charts.
Colleen Hoover’s novels sit at the vanguard of this new wave. August 2024 release It Ends With Us grossed a whopping £21 million, and Regretting You netted a smaller but still highly respectable £6.2 million in October of last year. Unfortunately, Reminders of Him doesn’t possess the same star-power as these previous two films, which were led by Blake Lively (It Ends With Us) and Dave Franco and Allison Williams (Regretting You). Reminders of Him‘s up-and-coming leads Maika Monroe (Longlegs) and Tyriq Withers (I Know What You Did Last Summer) have mostly appeared in horror films, a genre that doesn’t share an obvious crossover audience with Hoover’s books or their film adaptations. Reminders of Him does feature a supporting turn from Lauren Graham, whose stint on Gilmore Girls earned her the hearts of millennial women everywhere, but we don’t see this being a major draw on its own.
A number of shared elements between Reminders of Him and Regretting You, including their similar titles and the presence of a pivotal car crash in each, could dampen excitement for this weekend’s release, especially with a more high-profile Hoover book—Verity, with Anne Hathaway and Dakota Johnson—being brought to screen later this year. Though our prediction puts Reminders of Him below Regretting You’s £6.2 million box office gross in the U.K. and Ireland, we are cautiously optimistic that the film could exceed those expectations.
