We are ahead week-over-week and year-over-year this frame thanks to the ladies of The Devil Wears Prada 2, which boasted one of the biggest non-genre female-driven openings ever at $77M. The continued success of Michael helped bolster the overall as we firmly enter the summer movie arena.

$77M 3-Day Opening Weekend | $233.6M Global Total
20th Century Studios has kicked off the summer in style with the fashion world comedy The Devil Wears Prada 2, taking in nearly three times the original’s 2006 opening ($27.5M) with an estimated $77M from 4,150 locations for an $18,554 Per Screen Average. Although this is well below our forecasting panel’s pie in the sky forecast, it is right in line with the performance of last year’s Frame 18 winner Thunderbolts* ($74.3M opening) while targeting a totally different demo. It is the biggest opening frame ever for Meryl Streep and, while it did not best Michael‘s near-$100M domestic take from last week, it did shatter the King of Pop’s global bow of $217.36M with $233.6M.
Here’s how the 3-Day looked, including $10M in Thursday previews…
- Friday – $32.5M
- Saturday – $25M
- Sunday – $19.5M
Premium Large Format screens represented 29% of tickets purchased…
- PLF – 26%
- Screen X – 2%
- Motion (DBOX) – 1%
As expected the movie was female-heavy at 76% vs 24% male, proving yet again that a well-executed women’s picture can rake it in. Surprisingly, the biggest age demo was 25-34’s at 28%, almost all of whom would have been too young for the first movie two decades ago but possibly spurred by huge streaming numbers on the 2006 classic (up +428% from March to April). Rotten Tomatoes critical was just fine at 77% fresh, while audience score was 87% against an “A-” CinemaScore and GA 4.5 out of 5 stars on PostTrak. All of this positions the movie for great play through May and beyond.
Here’s how demographics broke down…
- Caucasian (49%)
- Hispanic (26%)
- AA (12%)
- Asian (8%)
- NatAm/Other (5%)
We mentioned Wednesday that international numbers on the first movie were great, but Devil Wears Prada 2 doubled its domestic debut overseas with $156.6M from 51 material territories for a $233.6M global bow. The first movie did $326.58M WW total, a number which will be eclipsed by next weekend. Italy (home base of the Prada brand) was the best territory at $16.6M, with Brazil ($12.6M) and the UK ($12M) rounding out the Top 3. This represents all markets except Vietnam, which gets the movie next week.
Other Notable Performances
Lionsgate’s Michael stayed the course with a solid -44% drop in its sophomore frame to take in $54M in Frame 2 for a $183.8M domestic take at #2. The international take was $80.85M, bringing global to $423.9M, nearly halfway towards Bohemian Rhapsody‘s $903.6M.
Neon’s folk horror picture Hokum starring Adam Scott was able to enter the Top 5 at #5 with $6.4M from 1,885 screens. Reactions are generally positive at 86% RT critical, 82% audience score, and a solid “B” CinemaScore for the genre.
Angel Studios’ release of the animated Animal Farm opened at #6 with $3.4M from 2,600 screens for a $1,308 PSA. Atypical for an Angel release, the film earned a poor “C-” CinemaScore and was unloved by critics with 25% on RT.
Next Weekend
Warner Bros. is giving their 2021 day-and-date theatrical/streaming movie Mortal Kombat ($42.3M domestic/$84.4M WW) a second lease on theatrical life with Mortal Kombat II, which is something of a soft reboot since it cedes the lead from Lewis Tan’s Cole Young to Karl Urban’s Johnny Cage. We also get Amazon/MGM’s The Sheep Detectives, which delivers a flock of sheep attempting to solve the murder of their shepherd (Hugh Jackman). With a solid cast and production personnel, along with a current 94% on RT, this could be a summer sleeper.
