Key Takeaways

Total 3-Day Weekend Gross:
$124,620,966 | -44.3% Last Week / -17.3% Weekend 15, 2025

It was deja vu as the Top 3 remained unchanged from last weekend, with Super Mario Galaxy once again dominating with an estimated $69M, or about half the overall. We are down year-over-year and week-over-week due to a lack of viable new product, a trend which may continue next frame as well.

  • Top Title: The Super Mario Galaxy Movie (Universal) | $69M / 4,284 Screens / $16,106 PSA | Week 2
  • Top Opener: You, Me & Tuscany (Universal) | $8M / 3,151 Screens / $2,539 PSA | Week 1
  • Best PSA: The Christophers (Neon) | $80.1K / 4 Screens / $20,028 PSA | Week 1

1. The Super Mario Galaxy Movie
Universal/Illumination | Week 2
$69M 3-Day Weekend | $308.1M Domestic Total
$628.76M Global Total

Universal and Illumination’s hit animated sequel The Super Mario Galaxy Movie held well in its sophomore frame by dropping -48% to earn an estimated $69M from 4,284 screens for a $16,106 Per Screen Average. That’s right in the middle of our forecasting panel’s range, though well below the second frame of the first Mario ($92.3M, -36.9%) as well as Frozen II ($85.97M, -34%) which it opened on par with. Now the top global grosser of the year, the film passed the $300M domestic and $600M global milestones on its way to hopefully nudging past $1B.

Here’s how the 3-Day looked…

  • Friday – $17.36M
  • Saturday – $30.38M
  • Sunday- $21.26M

Overseas The Super Mario Galaxy Movie held even firmer with $83.5M from 18,804 screens in 81 markets, posting -43% from holdovers (Poland was the only debut). International total is slightly above domestic at $320.6M, with $628.76M WW, nearly surpassing Universal’s 2025 family release How to Train Your Dragon ($636.59M WW).

4. You, Me & Tuscany
Universal Pictures | New
$8M 3-Day Opening Weekend | $9.1M Global Total

Universal Pictures attempted to deliver a straightforward romantic comedy with beautiful young stars and a lush foreign setting, but You, Me & Tuscany could not convert enough couples off the couch. The movie debuted at #4 with an estimated $8M from 3,151 screens for a $2,539 PSA, and ultimately could not fend off the star power of A24’s darker rom-com The Drama which took in $8.7M in its sophomore frame (also on exactly 3,151 screens). This performance fell on the lowest rung of our panel’s forecast.

Here’s how the 3-Day looked, including $750K in Thursday previews…

  • Friday – $3.17M
  • Saturday – $2.88M
  • Sunday- $1.95M

Audience was 80% female and 79% over age 25. Rotten Tomatoes critical was mezzo mezzo at 69%, but audience score came in at 94% and CinemaScore a decent “A-” meaning it could leg it out. Here’s how the demographics looked…

  • African American – 47%
  • Caucasian – 31%
  • Hispanic – 13%
  • Asian – 6%
  • NATAM/Other – 3%

Overseas You, Me & Tuscany failed to ingratiate itself, earning $1.1M in IBO for an estimated global opening of $9.4M.

Other Notable Performances

IFC released the meta horror flick Faces of Death, a tribute to the old VHS “snuff” series but couched in the modern internet age. Starring “Euphoria”‘s Barbie Ferreira, the movie opened at #6 to an estimated $1.7M from 1,600 screens for a $1,063 PSA. RT critical and audience score was an average 69%, while the “C” CinemaScore combined with low grosses means “Faces” might be singular in terms of franchising potential.

Neon released the latest Steven Soderbergh film The Christophers, a well-reviewed (96%) dramedy about art forgery that serves as a two-hander between Ian McKellen and Michaela Coel. The limited launch on four screens tallied $80.1K and earned the best PSA of the weekend at $20,028. This all bodes well for an expansion. Neon also had a surprise hit with Exit 8, a Japanese horror film based on a video game which has a 95% RT critical rating. The movie came in at #7 with $1.4M, and could either be a help or a hinderance to A24’s similarly liminal summer release Backrooms.

There was also the self distributed title The Hunting of Matthew Nichols which debuted on 901 screens, earning an estimated $600K with only a viral campaign ala Blair Witch Project. Directed by and starring Markian Tarasiuk, the film about a mysterious disappearance was distributed by Moon7 and Dropshock Pictures, with direct bookings to cinemas facilitated by The Fithian Group.

Next Weekend

Warner Bros. is giving Universal a run for their money with Lee Cronin’s The Mummy, a fresh take on the shambling monster franchise from the name-above-the-title Evil Dead Rise director. Michaela Coel also returns after her turn in The Christophers alongside Anne Hathaway in Mother Mary, A24’s psychosexual drama from The Green Knight director David Lowery.
