Theatrical Total Forecast: £14M – £17M

Cinema advertising company Pearl & Dean has released their predicted opening range for Warner Bros. DC Comics adaptation Supergirl, opening in the U.K. and Ireland this weekend.

James Gunn and Warner Bros relaunched the DC Universe with a bang in last year’s Superman, which was the highest grossing superhero film of 2025 at £28 million. We are hopeful that Supes’ success will give Craig Gillespie’s Supergirl a leg up at the box office.

The film sports a similar aesthetic to Gunn’s Superman (and, for that matter, his Guardians of the Galaxy trilogy for Marvel), and there is a strong amount of continuity between the two films. Milly Alcock cameoed as Kara Zor-El at the end of Superman, while its fan-favourite super pooch Krypto is playing a central role in Supergirl’s narrative. Trailers have also foregrounded David Corenswet’s appearance as Superman, however small it may actually be.

However, despite all this connective tissue, Supergirl is an unknown quantity in cinemas, which leaves us cautious in our predictions. The character is perhaps best loved from her TV appearances as part of the “Arrowverse” franchise and has seen limited time on the big screen. She was portrayed by Helen Slater in a scarcely remembered 1984 solo film and more recently by Sasha Cole in box-office bomb The Flash (£8.8 million).

It has been a long time since a solo superhero was successfully launched completely fresh onto the big screen. Marvel hasn’t attempted it since 2021 with Shang-Chi and the Legend of The Ten Rings (which scored an impressive £21.4 million considering its Covid-era release) and Eternals (which underwhelmed at £14 Million). The erstwhile DCEU last did it with 2023’s Blue Beetle, which netted only £4.6 million; the year prior, Black Adam did a bit better with approximately £22 million.

.On top of that, Alcock is not a household name whose fame will help boost numbers—she’s best known for an early supporting role in HBO’s House of The Dragon—though the presence of the much-loved Jason Momoa, playing intergalactic bounty hunter Lobo, should help in that regard. That said, female-led superhero films are still disappointingly far and few between—meaning that when audiences are excited about them they often do make a point to show up. To wit, Wonder Woman made £22 million in 2017 and Captain Marvel £29 million in 2019, admittedly a time when the genre was more broadly popular. Even with a day-and-date streaming, release Black Widow still raked in £18 million in 2021, although she had a decade-plus of goodwill behind her. We suspect Supergirl will come in a little below these female counterparts in the £14-17 million range.

Comparators: Superman (£28 Million), Wonder Woman (£22 Million), Black Widow (£18 Million), Shang-Chi and the Legend of The Ten Rings (£21.4 Million), Eternals (£14 Million)
