Bleecker Street’s event cinema division Crosswalk and collaborator LD Entertainment have announced that the live theater capture of Tony Award-winning hit musical Hadestown, titled Hadestown: The Musical, has officially nabbed the number one grossing opening weekend for a live theater capture at the North American box office, surpassing Hamilton. Hadestown: The Musical grossed $10.2M in 1,949 theaters this past weekend. Initially projected at $9.69M, word-of-mouth and repeat viewings pushed the Sunday box office higher than expected. Due to popular demand, the initially limited 5-day run has officially been extended and will continue to add dates and showtimes moving forward.
The production, written by Anaïs Mitchell and directed by Rachel Chavkin, won eight Tony Awards in 2019, including Best Musical, and the 2020 Grammy Award for Best Musical Theater. The cast in this production—filmed in London and directed by Brett Sullivan of Steam Motion and Sound—includes the five original principals of the Broadway company; Reeve Carney as Orpheus, André De Shields’ Tony Award-winning turn as Hermes, Amber Gray as Persephone, Eva Noblezada as Eurydice, and Patrick Page as Hades.
Bleecker Street and Crosswalk CEO Kent Sanderson said, “We and LD always believed in the passion of the fans of this amazing show, and we are immensely proud of the campaign and result this weekend. We are extending the run so audiences have even more time to catch up with this soul-stirring, iconic musical.”
LD’s Mickey Liddell and Pete Shilaimon said, “Ever since joining the Hadestown team on Broadway, LD has believed in the power of its story and the love of every artist involved. What a gift to share this long road with the Hadestown community, and with our dear friends and collaborators at Bleecker. We raise our cups to the fans and newcomers alike who’ve joined in across the country to sing this song again and again.”
“We’re incredibly proud of this film. It’s the result of a rare creative partnership between the Steam Motion and Sound Team, led by Brett Sullivan, and the creative heart of Hadestown itself—Rachel Chavkin, whose original direction and contribution to the film are indelible, alongside Anaïs Mitchell and myself,” said Producer Mara Isaacs. “So much intention and care went into each choice, and it’s especially gratifying to see how audiences have responded.”
