The Super Mario Galaxy Movie | Universal

Domestic Opening Weekend Range: $145M – $160M (3-Day) – $160M – $175M (5-Day)

The moment exhibitors have been waiting for all year arrives when The Super Mario Galaxy Movie debuts on Wednesday, April 1.

In keeping with the pattern of family-film sequels opening higher than their predecessors—see Moana 2 ($139.7M domestic opening) vs. Moana ($56.6M), Sonic the Hedgehog 2 ($72.1M) vs. Sonic the Hedgehog ($58M), Zootopia 2 ($100.2M) vs. Zootopia ($75M), and Jumanji: The Next Level ($59.2M) vs. Jumanji: Welcome to the Jungle ($36.1M)—we have The Super Mario Galaxy Movie opening above 2023’s The Super Mario Bros..

Like The Super Mario Galaxy Movie, The Super Mario Bros. Movie debuted on the first Wednesday of April, opening to $1476.3M over the five-day weekend ($146.3M 3-day) and eventually becoming the second-highest grosser of the year, trailing only Barbie. Two years later, A Minecraft Movie—similarly a family-friendly video game adaptation with a strong nostalgia play—opened in that same frame (albeit on Friday) to a three-day cume of $162.7M.
