Friday Morning Update: 2016 really is the year of the mouse. The latest proof is the debut trailer of their Thanksgiving animated opener Moana which led all films on Twitter over the past week. Being out front for an animated feature film with 150k+ tweets on a week is nothing to laugh at and a firm demonstration that Moana has a lot of people interested in it which is music to Disney’s ears no doubt for the holiday season. 73,920 tweets was what it bagged on Monday the 13th thanks to the trailer, and while that might be nowhere near the trailer tweet record of 260,000 it was top 10 for animated films. By comparison, Finding Dory‘s 182,021 tweets for its second trailer holds the animated film record. With $1.5 billion in the bag already for 2016 domestically and an upcoming slate that contains Finding Dory, Doctor Strange, Rogue One: A Star Wars Story, The BFG, Pete’s Dragon and Moana Disney is well poised to break just about every major studio box office record in 2016.
Suicide Squad padded its run of consecutive top ten finishes to 25 this past week, and eighth above 100,000 tweets since being added to our tracking last Summer. We are currently predicting a $98 million opening weekend.
Ghostbusters continues to chew up bytes even though it fell from first to third this week. It has become a permanent fixture in the top 5 along with Suicide Squad over the past few weeks and is well poised to turn heads on opening weekend, especially on those nay-sayers (of which there are many) who have been very negative over the past few months.
Lastly. Storks debuted its second trailer this past week which saw it rise from relative anonymity to 7th spot amongst all upcoming films. Unlike Moana this doesn’t have nearly the same amount of anticipation or buzz surrounding it which is an indication that its going to have a hard time filling seats with anything other than younger kids which should severely limit its opening potential unless the marketing gurus at Warner Bros. can find a way of broadening its appeal.
