The box office came roaring back with the biggest 3-Day overall take of the year, mightily surpassing year-over-year from this time in 2025 when Snow White landed on the ground like a poison apple with a bite in it. More than half of that haul comes from Amazon MGM’s Project Hail Mary, a sci-fi original that has won over critics and audiences, becoming the biggest opener of the year. Disney’s Hoppers continued to serve the younger quad that the Gosling movie was not catering to, while two genre movies duked it out for third.

$80.58M 3-Day Opening Weekend | $140.9M Global Total
After three years as a combined entity, Amazon/MGM celebrated their biggest opening weekend ever with Project Hail Mary, which took in $80.58M from 4,007 screens for a $20,111 Per Screen Average. The uplifting sci-fi adventure can boast the second-highest original/non-IP opening of the decade, behind Oppenheimer ($82M), and is performing slightly above our high-end forecast. That’s also above the openings of similar space adventures Interstellar ($47.5M) and The Martian ($54.3M), indicating audiences were starved for an original sci-fi voyage like this.
This is also the top opener for directors Phil Lord & Chris Miller, and the second-best for star Ryan Gosling after Barbie‘s $162M. However, this is easily Gosling’s best debut as a solo lead, surpassing the lifetime gross of most of his previous headlining gigs, which typically come in under $50M. Hail Mary will handily pass the $92M domestic lifetime of previous Gosling tentpoles Blade Runner 2049 and The Fall Guy within days, leveling up the hunk’s star status.
Here’s how the 3-Day looked, including $12M for Thursday previews…
- Friday – $33.1M
- Saturday – $27.1M
- Sunday – $20.3M
The movie also won on all word-of-mouth fronts, boasting 95% critical and 96% audience scores via Rotten Tomatoes as well as an “A” CinemaScore (95% in the top 2 boxes). Audiences were 57% male vs. 43% female, with the largest quad being ages 25-34 (26%). Here’s how demographics looked…
- 60% White
- 20% Hispanic
- 9% Asian
- 6% AA
- 5% NatAm/ Other
A special statement was issued by Amazon MGM Studios’ Head of Domestic Theatrical Distribution, Kevin Wilson: “We believe deeply in the Hail Mary, and it’s clear audiences do as well. What we’re seeing in theaters—the energy, the exit scores, the word of mouth—is everything we believed this film would deliver. Andy Weir’s beloved novel gave us a powerful foundation, and Phil Lord and Christopher Miller have created a visually stunning, heart-gripping film led by the brilliant Ryan Gosling that demands to be experienced on the biggest screen possible–together, with a crowd. When you combine that with the exceptional critical response and strong audience reactions, you tend to find yourself in rarefied air.”
Internationally, Project Hail Mary earned $60.4M from 82 markets, representing 90% of the overseas footprint. The movie opened at #1 in over 60 of those markets, including the United Kingdom, France, Germany, Italy, Mexico, Brazil, Australia, and Japan. The top 3 territories are the UK ($10.2M), China ($7.1M), and Australia ($5M). The global total stands at $140.9M. Next week sees bows in Spain, India, and Malaysia, followed by Indonesia on April 8.
Other Noatable Performances
Disney/Pixar’s Hoppers crossed the $100M barrier this week, earning an estimated $18M for the weekend to bring domestic to $120.38M in its third frame, surpassing the lifetime of Lightyear ($118.3M) and by tomorrow The Good Dinosaur ($123M) as well. Globally, the animated movie now stands at $242.6M, surpassing Lightyear ($226.4M).
After the original made $19.7M during its December run last year, the Bollywood sequel Dhurandhar: The Revenge has soared into the Top 3 with an estimated $9.57M opening, taking #3 over the Ready or Not sequel (the two could switch come Monday actuals). This marks a record-breaking opening weekend for the biggest opening weekend of all-time for a Bollywood film in North America, and is doubly impressive for doing so on only 987 screens for a $9,698 PSA at four hours in length. The total since Wednesday pre-shows is $13.5M
Coming in at #4 is Ready or Not 2: Here I Come, which topped the 2019 original’s $8M bow with an estimated $9.1M. RT critical was 76% borderline Fresh, with an 89% audience score and “B+” CinemaScore, i.e. solid enough to leg it out another weekend or two.
Next Weekend
A light weekend is forthcoming in the next frame in terms of new arrivals, with the only real contender being WB’s action/horror/comedy They Will Kill You starring Zazie Beetz as an ex-con who enters a mysterious building while looking for a job. The SXSW premiere was greeted with mostly positive reception, resulting in a current RT score of 76%. Unlikely to unseat Project Hail Mary, but could be a refreshing genre original.
