The Strangers: Chapter 3 | Lionsgate

Domestic Opening Weekend Range: $5M – $10M

Director Renny Harlin’s Strangers trilogy concludes with Chapter 3, which will contend with a big dip in demand stemming from last year’s The Strangers: Chapter 2. That film already saw a steep drop in box office compared to 2024’s The Strangers: Chapter 1, which opened to $11.8M en route to a $35.2M domestic gross. The following year, Chapter 2 was poorly received by critics (15% approval rating on Rotten Tomatoes) and moviegoers (C- CinemaScore), paving the road for a $5.8M debut ($15.1M domestic total). Lionsgate has placed all three films on different points in the calendar—Chapter 1 in mid-May and Chapter 2 in late September—so there’s a chance that this move to Q1 might tap into an unexplored demand for the franchise… but, if it doesn’t, expect Chapter 3 to come in closer to Chapter 2 in box office receipts than Chapter 1.

The Strangers: Chapter 3 is one of several horror titles coming to theaters in Q1, which usually sees a fair number of genre titles hoping to attract an audience beyond the core horror set. Every once in a while there’s a breakout hit like January 2022’s Scream ($30M) or M3GAN ($30.4M domestic opening), released in a few days before New Year’s 2021, but the last two years have lacked a true crossover horror hit. Aside from The Strangers: Chapter 3, the horror titles vying the honor this time around include January’s Primate and 28 Years Later: The Bone Temple, February’s Psycho Killer and Scream 7, and March’s The Bride!, The Undertone, They Will Kill You, and Ready Or Not: Here I Come.
