Saturday Afternoon Update: Suicide Squad punched in with a whopping $65.1 million on Friday, shattering the previous August opening day record of $37.8 million set by Guardians Of The Galaxy back in 2014. On Twitter it was even more impressive as its 646,724 tweets broke the 2014 record of Fault In Our Stars’ 556,552 for the largest opening day buzz ever on the service. Here at BoxOffice Pro we have spoken at length in recent months about its social media prowess (see our Social Media section) but the fact that it managed to translate that momentum into a bigger opening day than the likes of Deadpool, Batman V Superman: Dawn Of Justice and even the great Star Wars: The Force Awakens was somewhat of a surprise.
The critics have not been kind to the film and accordingly its positive to negative ratio on Twitter was very close to that of Batman V Superman and Divergent, the only other two films in the top 10 list below to see a Rotten Tomatoes rating of under 50%. The next big question is how strong its Saturday and Sunday will be in light of the poor reviews and assumed weak word of mouth since many of its built-in fans would have already seen it on Thursday and Friday. By comparison, Batman V Superman had 442,672 tweets on its Saturday of release and saw its positive to negative ratio fall to 2:1.
