Twitter Futures: ‘Finding Dory’ #1 For Second Week in a Row

Friday Morning Update: Finding Dory dropped yet another trailer this past week, this time it actually broke its own animated film trailer record as it rung up 182,021 tweets. This makes it the first animated film since the beginning of 2015 to lead the weekly twitter leader board for three different weeks prior to release. Its virtually unheard of for a trailer this late in the release cycle to be the top tweet-getting event and shows that it is peaking at the right time. Yes some of the buzz was escalated by the fact that there was speculation that the film would have the first LGBT acknowledgement of any major animated release (thanks to a very brief shot of two woman together with a stroller). The icing on the cake is that the film’s sentiment was a ludicrous 1400 positive to every negative tweet. Now while sentiment is not as powerful of a measure as overall tweets its still a very positive marker. Its widely acknowledged that the film is going to be massive but after this recent trailer it appears as though its going to be an event film which will have a good shot at re-writing many of the animated records including opening weekend and total gross.

Taking second place for the fourth week in a row was Ghostbusters with 167,484 tweets. Quite a few things contributed here such as Judd Apatow saying that haters of the film are likely Donald Trump fans, or the announcement that the old cast of the original and new cast will be doing promotional outings together before the release, and then some soundtrack news (that the them esong would be remade with Missy Elliot and Fallout Boy) had haters and supporters sounding off. What’s perhaps most interesting is that the positive to negative ratio was the best it has ever been over the last couple days which means that its marketing campaign is doing something right to be starting to change the tide of its pre-release sentiment.

We were unfortunately not tracking Beauty And The Beast at the time that its first trailer came out last week but after being added it still managed to crack the top 5 a week later. Based on the residual buzz it would appear as though its actual trailer day would have been even above that of the wildly successful Cinderella.
